What Does Presbyterian Mean?

Good question! Presbyterians are Protestant Christians who trace their history back to John Calvin and the reformers of the 17th century. The word "presbyterian" comes from the Greek presbyteros (πρεσβύτερος), which means "elder". We have a democratic, representative form of government where elected church elders along with the pastors make decisions for the congregation. Our church is part of the Presbyterian Church (USA) (www.pcusa.org) and the Presbytery of Southern New England (www.psne.org). For a general introduction to Presbyterian history and beliefs see the information on the PCUSA web page.
